Manufacturing pottery begins by blending clay (clay¸ marne¸ silica). We can give the clay the desired form by kneading it. The first technique of kneading is stamping¸ but the mixture can also be beaten. We can also add mineral materials (sand¸ gravels¸ shells…) to harden its consistence.
It is the most artistic step of the manufacturing process. The best technique is called "tournage". The tour is a rotating plate called "girelle". After the object dries enough to have a "leather" aspect¸ the turner adjusts the defects and deepens the base of the pottery. When the clay is perfectly dry, the cooking of the soft articles can be achieved at a high temperature level. The firing mode first with wood then coal¸ fume¸ electricity…needs particular attention it determines the hardness of ceramics. We can have different results by increasing or decreasing oxygen in the flame.
